Question: I'm 66 years old and had a consultation with you a year ago about having a facelift. I looked at the Before & After Album of your surgeries and was so impressed with the results of your vector technique. I have only one reservation about having the procedure; my cheeks have really thinned and I'm scared '™ll look like a skeleton. Is there a way to prevent that?

Answer: I'm excited to give you a new answer to your question! When I initially responded to your email, the only answer I had for you was the comparatively time consuming and more costly option of a free fat transfer procedure, to replace the lost tissue volume in your face.

On October 23 of this year, the FDA approved a product called, JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC injectable gel. It's the first and only injectable filler approved to temporarily correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area of people age 21 years and over. It was created for adults whose cheeks have flattened causing the skin to droop and sag. '™ll give you a brief summary of the product and if you want more information, you can go to www.juvederm.com.

JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC works instantly, so you should see visible results that give a natural, more youthful appearance to your face before you leave the office. It's a non-surgical treatment that requires relatively little recovery or downtime. The possible side effects could be swelling, minimal bruising, soreness, itching, or a raised temperature; should any of these occur, they ought to resolve in 2-4 weeks. JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC contains a small amount of lidocaine, which helps to numb the treatment area during the injection procedure. It gives long lasting results, (up to 2 years with optimal treatment) and occasionally requires a touch up treatment to give ideal results.

JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC is new to the U.S. market but was initially used in Europe without the lidocaine in2006 and outside the U.S. with the lidocaine added in 2009. It's available by prescription only through a physician for use in patients' age 35-65 years of age.

Dr. Mark Foglietti is a national trainer for Allergan Inc. and will be one of the first physicians in the country to offer JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC. Dr. Foglietti director of the Cosmetic Surgery Institute in Beachwood, Ohio starts treatment with JUVEDERM VOLUMA â„¢ XC the first week of December 2013.
